Beclomethasone Nasal Spray is a prescription medication. It is prescribed for the prevention and control of asthma symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is also used to prevent swelling on the nose lining after nasal polyp removal surgery.

Beclomethasone nasal spray belongs to the group of drug known as a corticosteroid. It is the first-line treatment for asthma symptoms. It works directly into the lung and very little find its way into the body, therefore, it has fewer side effects compared with oral corticosteroids.

It decreases the swelling and irritation in the lungs to make breathing easier. However, it does not treat sneezing, itchy, stuffy runny nose due to common colds. Do not also use this to treat an active asthma attack. 

How to Use It

Use this medication exactly as directed by your physician. The usual recommended dose is 40 to 160mmcg two times a day depending on the previous asthma attack and age. The maximum dose is 320mg a day. Children younger than 6 years of age must not use this medication. Use this nasal spray every day even if you do not experience any symptoms. This should not be used as a rescue inhaler for your asthma.

This product is for inhalation use only. Do not swallow or spray this into your mouth. If you are using this spray for the first time, read the product label carefully and follow the steps on how to prime the nasal spray. Doctor might prescribe you Aerocort Inhaler (Beclomethasone Dipropionate + Levosalbutamol) as an alternative. It is a treatment known as a short-acting adrenergic receptor and is used against COPD or an asthma.

Possible Side Effects of Beclomethasone Nasal Spray

This product is well-tolerated. However, just like any other nasal sprays, it may cause some side effects too. Common side effects are:

  • Itching Wheezing
  • Fever
  • Chill
  • Dizziness
  • Nosebleed
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blurred vision
  • Swollen face, ankles and lower legs

In case of serious side effects, contact your doctor right away. Call your doctor if your asthma worsens after using this medication.

Getting the Best Result from Beclomethasone Nasal Spray

  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Your symptoms may improve after a few days of treatment but it may take one to two weeks before you will feel the full benefits.
  • Do not use this product if you are allergic to it.
  • Do not stop using this medication without telling your doctor.
