Ringworm

What causes ringworm?

These fungi can be transmitted through direct contact with infected humans or animals, as well as contaminated objects or surfaces. The fungus then enters the skin through cuts, breaks, or by touching an infected person or animal. It then spreads, forming a circular ring on the skin.

Factors such as poor hygiene, sharing personal items, and compromised immune function can increase the risk of ringworm infection.

Types of Ringworm

Ringworm can manifest in different forms, including:

1.  Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body): This is the most common type of ringworm. It affects the skin and can be contagious. The ring is usually red, itchy, and scaly.

2.  Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp): This type of ringworm affects the scalp. It can be contagious and can spread to the face and neck. The ring is usually itchy, red, and scaly.

3.  Tinea cruris (jock itch): This type of ringworm affects the groin area. It can be contagious and can spread to other parts of the body. The ring is usually red, itchy, and scaly.

4.  Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot): This type of ringworm affects the feet. It is contagious and can spread to other parts of the body.

5.  Tinea barbae: This type of ringworm affects the beard area. It can be contagious and can spread to other parts of the body. 

6.  Tinea unguium (ringworm of the nails): This type of ringworm affects the nails. It can be contagious and can spread to other parts of the body. 

Is ringworm contagious?

Ringworm is highly contagious and can spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual or animal, as well as contact with contaminated objects or surfaces. The fungus can live on surfaces for months, making it difficult to eliminate from the environment.

It is important to practice good hygiene and avoid sharing personal items to prevent the spread of ringworm.

How is ringworm treated?

Treatment for ringworm depends on the type and severity of the infection. Mild cases of ringworm can clear up on their own within a few weeks. More serious infections may require treatment for six to 12 weeks.

Corticosteroid creams may help reduce inflammation, but they shouldn’t be used to treat ringworm. They may worsen the infection. Mild cases of ringworm can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or powders. 

For more severe cases, your healthcare provider may prescribe oral antifungal medications. These medications can be taken for several weeks to help clear up the infection.

How to prevent ringworm?

To avoid ringworm infections, persons should maintain appropriate hygiene habits, including: 

1.  Keeping the skin clean and dry, particularly in sweat-prone areas. 

2.  Avoid sharing personal goods like clothing, towels, combs, and brushes. 

3.  Wearing protective footwear in public showers, locker rooms, and pools. 

4.  Treating and avoiding fungal infections in pets can help to lower the risk of transmission. 

5.  Cuts, scratches, and other skin injuries should be treated as soon as possible to avoid fungal infection.
