Adapalene Benzoyl Peroxide

Adapalene Benzoyl Peroxide is a combination topical medication. It is prescribed for the treatment of acne vulgaris among patients 9 years of age and older. The combined action of this medication decreases the severity of acne vulgaris. At the same time, it promotes the healing of acne in the face.

Benzoyl peroxide is a keratolytic agent. It works by breaking down the keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. It reduces the amount of acne–causing bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes. These bacteria feed on the skin’s natural oil or sebum and produces waste products that irritate the sebaceous glands. Benzoyl peroxide causes the skin to dry and peel off.

Adapalene is a topical retinoid, a vitamin A derivative. It works by increases the number of skin cells turnover. It has an anti-inflammatory property that helps reduces skin redness and swelling. Both ingredients help unblock the skin pores and the sebaceous glands. This allows the skin’s natural oil to escape thus reducing the formation of spots and blackheads.

Adapalene Benzoyl Peroxide is a topical preparation that must be applied on the skin. Use this once a day before going to bed. Before using, clean the affected area with a mild cleanser. Apply only a thin layer of the medicine then gently rub it. Do not let any of the medicine get into your eyes and other sensitive parts of your body. Do not use it in a larger amount or more often than recommended. You can use this medication on the chest and back.

Possible Side Effects of Topical Adapalene Benzoyl Peroxide

The following are common side effects of this medication:

• Dry and peeling skin
• Skin redness
• Burning sensation
• Contact dermatitis

Common side effects may tend to improve after two to four weeks. Uncommon side effects include:

• Sunburn
• Itching

Getting the Best Result from Topical Adapalene Benzoyl Peroxide

• This medication can cause a rare but serious allergic reaction. Before using, apply a very small amount on 1 or 2 acne areas for 3 days in a row. If there is no reaction, use the prescribed amount on the 4^th day.
• Do not apply this medication on sunburned, broken and sensitive areas of the skin.
• This medication is suitable for most people. However, pregnant women and children below 9 years of age must not use this medication.
• Avoid staying too long under the heat of the sun. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Do not use sunlamps and sunbeds.
• To help address skin dryness you can apply non-oily moisturizers.
