What are the Causes of Impotence?

The cause of impotence is usually a lack of blood flow to the vascular region of the body. Sometimes, it is caused by psychological factors, alcohol, smoking, obesity, and other related health conditions. Impotence is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. Having erection trouble from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern.

Symptoms of Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction

Impotence
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Trouble keeping an erection
  • Reduced sexual desire

See your doctor if:

  • You have concerns about your erections
  • You are experiencing other sexual problems
  • You have premature or delayed ejaculation
  • You have diabetes, heart disease, or other conditions that link to erectile dysfunction
  • You have other symptoms along with erectile dysfunction

What Causes Impotence?

  • Endocrine diseases. An example of an endocrine disease that can cause impotence is diabetes. One of the complications associated with chronic diabetes is nerve damage. This affects penis sensations and other complications.
  • Neurological and nerve disorders. Several neurologic conditions can increase the risk for impotence. Nerve conditions affect the brain’s ability to communicate with the reproductive system. This can prevent you from achieving an erection. Neurological conditions include Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, temporal lobe epilepsy, and brain tumors.
  • Taking medications. It is possible to suffer from impotence when taking certain medications. Examples of medications known to cause impotence include alpha-adrenergic blockers, beta-blockers, and cancer chemotherapy medications.
  • Cardiac-related conditions. Irregular heartbeat and difficulties pumping blood well are some of the causes of impotence. Without enough blood flow to the penis, you can’t achieve an erection. Atherosclerosis, a condition that causes the blood vessels to become clogged, can cause impotence.
  • Lifestyle factors and emotional disorders.  If you have an emotional disorder, it’ll affect your ability to become sexually excited. Depression and anxiety are associated with increased risk for impotence.
  • Performance anxiety. It can also cause impotence. Having previously failed to achieve an erection may cause you to fear that you won’t be able to do so in the future.

How to Diagnose Impotence?

In diagnosing impotence, your doctor may ask questions and assess your symptoms and recommend some treatment. If your doctor suspects other condition that causes impotence, your doctor may recommend other testing methods including:

  • Physical exam
  • Blood test
  • Urine test
  • Ultrasound and psychological exam
