Frequently Ask Questions About Tinidazole

What condition does Tinidazole treat?

Tinidazole is used for the treatment of infections with anaerobic bacteria and as part of triple therapy to eradicate a type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) from the gut. This medication can also use in combination with a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole or lansoprazole. It may be used with the antibiotics amoxicillin or clarithromycin for this purpose. Tinidazole may also be used for the treatment of:

  • Amoebic infection of the liver or intestine
  • Bacterial infection of the skin and soft tissue
  • Bacterial infection of the blood
  • Bacterial infection of the abdomen
  • Protozoal infection of the urinary organs or genitals
  • Painful inflammation and ulcers of the gums
  • Vaginitis

Tinidazole is used to treat these types of infections, as well as skin and soft tissue infections such as leg ulcers and pressure sores that are infected with anaerobic bacteria.

How does Tinidazole work?

In anaerobic bacteria, this medication enters the bacterial and protozoal cells. It interferes with their genetic material called DNA. It harms the DNA and also stops the protozoa and bacteria from creating new DNA. This eventually results in Tinidazole killing the micro-organisms which clear up the infection.

In Helicobacter pylori, the occurrence of these bacteria in the gut is related to ulcers of the duodenum and stomach. Duodenum is a part of the intestine right after the stomach. Eradicating H pylori from the gut permits ulcers to heal and also helps avoid them from recurring.
