Lung cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the lungs and it is considered one of the most common causes of death related to cancer. Lung cancer occurs when cells divide in the lungs and causes tumors to grow. It affects breathing and may spread to other parts of the body. Types and Stages of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer has two types, known as, small-cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common than small cell lung cancer. This condition may grow in three stages:

  1. Localized stage. It is confined to a small area.
  2. Regional. Lymph and other tissues nearby are being infiltrated by cancer cells.
  3. Distant. There is an expansion of cancer cells throughout the body.

For non-small cell lung cancer, staging includes:

  • Hidden. In imaging tests or scans, it is not visible, but it appears in mucus.
  • Stage 0. Airway lining cells begin to pop with abnormal cells.
  • Stage 1. The tumor is 4 centimeters in size, but it has not spread to other parts of the body.
  • Stage 2. It grows up to 7 centimeters and spreads to surrounding tissues.
  • Stage 3. A cancerous cell spreads to lymph nodes and other parts of the lung.
  • Stage 4. As the cancer cells spread, they reach distant parts of the body. It includes the brain and bones.

The Recommended Treatment for Lung Cancer

  • Surgery. The purpose of surgery is to remove the affected cells of the lungs.
  • Chemotherapy. This is often recommended after surgery. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill any remaining cancer cells.
  • Radiation therapy. This uses high-powered energy beams from sources such as X-rays and protons to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy may help reduce cancer symptoms such as pain.
  • Immunotherapy. This treatment uses the immune system to fight cancer cells. Immunotherapy works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells.
  • Palliative care. This is a specialty area of medicine that involves working with a doctor to minimize your signs and symptoms after surgery and chemotherapy.

Medication Used for Lung Cancer Treatment

Erlotinib is an anti-cancer medicine used to treat lung cancer. It contains an ingredient that inhibits the activity of the protein preventing the production of cancer cells.  Erlotinib works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals the cancer cells to multiply and stop the spread of cancer cells.
