Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is an antifungal medicine that is used in certain kinds of fungal infections. This may also be used to prevent a relapse after treatment of the first treatment. This is an FDA-approved prescription that comes as a tablet for oral use.

What condition does Ketoconazole treat?

Ketoconazole is used for the treatment of fungal infections and Cushing’s disease. This is mostly recommended by many doctors since it is capable of stopping the growth of the fungus. It blocks the formation of cortisol in the adrenal glands and for that reason, it treats Cushing’s disease.

How does Ketoconazole work?

Fungal infections happen once an invading fungus takes over a part of the body and is excessive for the immune system to handle. When fungi invade the body, they can be hard to kill as they can survive in the environment and re-infect the person trying to get better.

Ketoconazole is in the class of medications called azole antifungals. This works by stopping the growth of the fungus. This should not be used for the treatment of fungal infections on the skin and nails due to the risk of drug interactions and serious side effects.

What is the dosage of Ketoconazole?

Ketoconazole is a 200 mg tablet to be taken orally. This medication is usually taken once a day, by mouth as directed by your doctor. Each dose of Ketoconazole may be taken with or without food but taking it with food helps prevent an upset stomach. The dosage and how often you will be taking this medication depends on your condition, response, and other medications you may be taking. Make sure to tell your doctor about all the products you use including herbal products, prescription, or non-prescription drugs. In children, the dosage will also depend on weight. For a complete treatment, it may take from several days to several months.

If you are taking an antacid, take this medication at least 2 hours before or an hour after taking the antacid. Ketoconazole may not be absorbed into the body if taken together.

This medication will work at its finest when the quantity of it in your body is kept at a constant level. You should take this medication at evenly spaced intervals. Take it at the same time each day to help you remember. If you forget a dose, contact your healthcare provider or doctor for instructions. Continue taking Ketoconazole until the full prescription is finished even if the symptoms disappear after a few days. Your infection may return if you suddenly stop the medication. Let your doctor know if your condition persists or worsens.
