Dapsone Gel

Dapsone gel is an acne-fighting medication. It is used to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It is an effective anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent. It works by reducing the bacteria known as P. acnes that cause an acne breakout. It also helps reduce inflammation and swelling.

Dapsone 5% gel is U.S FDA approved for the treatment of acne vulgaris in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It works similarly to topical clindamycin and erythromycin. Its active ingredient is sulfone antibiotic so technically it is an antibiotic. You can use it to treat both body and facial acne. It is also effective in treating blackheads and milia, a small non-inflamed cyst on the face.

Unlike other acne medications, Dapsone gel is a safe and effective multimodal monotherapy for acne. Many oral and topical acne treatments are effective against acne but a problem arises when irritation arises and bacteria develop resistance. You can use Dapsone gel alone or along with other oral or topical acne medications.

How to Use It

Dapsone gel is only available by prescription. It’s generally not hard on the skin making it a good alternative for Retin –A. It’s even safe for children 12 years of age and older. When using this gel, apply a liberal amount on the acne affected-areas. Use it at least two times in a day. You can apply it on the chest, back, neck, arms or wherever there is acne. Apply the gel where acne breakouts are a problem and not just on the pimples.
