Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone are drugs that have been approved by the FDA to prevent pregnancy in women who are using an oral contraceptive. This is a low-dose, monophasic oral contraceptive that has a unique progestin.
Where are Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone used?
Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone is a combined birth control pill that has two female hormones to prevent ovulation. Ovulation is a release of an egg from an ovary. This pill can also cause changes in your uterine lining and cervical mucus. As a result, it makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
This medication is also prescribed to treat moderate acne in women:
- Have started having menstrual periods
- Who are at least 14 years of age
- Who wish to use birth control pills
In addition, Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone are used to treat symptoms of the premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) such as:
- Weight gain
- Headache
- Muscle or joint pain
- Breast tenderness
- Appetite or sleep changes
- Lack of energy
- Trouble concentrating
- Irritability
- Depression
- Anxiety
How do Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone work?
Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone contain hormones called estrogen and progestogen. Combined pills revoke your natural menstrual cycle and work essentially by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg each month when ovulation happens. It also increases the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb. Wherein, it makes it hard for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb. Also, it thins the lining of the womb which makes it tougher for any successfully fertilized eggs to implant there.
What is the dosage of Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone?
- Take this pill 24 hours apart as directed by your doctor.
- This is taken by mouth once a day, with or without food.
- Take the pill at the same time each day. To help you remember, pick a time that is easy for you to remember.
- It helps to lessen nausea and an upset stomach when taking after your evening meal or at bedtime.
- Start with the first pill in the pack and follow the instructions. Take each pill in the correct order.
- You should not skip any doses. If you missed a dose, pregnancy is more likely to occur. You may also get pregnant when this medication is taken at a different time of the day than usual or you started a new pack of pills late.
If you are using Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone for the first time and you are not switching from another form of hormonal birth control:
- Take the first pill on the first Sunday following the beginning of your monthly period.
- Use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control for the first cycle of use only. It may be used for the first 7 days to avoid pregnancy until the pill has enough time to work.
- Do not use a backup birth control pill for the first week if you start on the first day of your monthly period.
What are the precautions in using Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone?
- Do not smoke while having this contraceptive pill, especially if you are older than 35 years old.
- This pill will not protect you from HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only method to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases.
- Other medications may interact with Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone including over-the-counter or prescription medicines, herbal products, and vitamins. Some medications can make this contraceptive pill less effective which may result in pregnancy. Inform your doctor about all your current medications and any medicine you start or stop using.
- Talk to your doctor if you do not understand some instructions. Missing a pill may increase your risk of becoming pregnant.
- This is not recommended for use if you are pregnant. Stop taking a pill and inform your doctor right away if you become pregnant or if you miss 2 menstrual periods in a row.
If you miss a menstrual period check with your doctor. Missed periods might happen if you skip one or more pills and have not taken a dose exactly as directed by your health care provider.
